Poros – The 3rd Green Island of Greece

In an announcement at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis revealed that the idyllic island of Poros is set to become Greece’s third Green Island.

Following Astypalaia and Halki‘s sustainable footsteps, Poros is also poised to undergo a transformative journey towards environmental harmony through the GR-Eco Islands sustainability program.

Poros Greece

This green evolution is a collaborative effort between the Greek Environment and Energy Ministry and Masdar, a global leader in renewable energy based in the UAE. The agreement, ceremoniously signed by Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Dr Sultan Al Jaber, President of COP28 and Masdar, marks a pivotal moment in the burgeoning relationship between the UAE and Greece.

Poros, chosen strategically for its proximity to Athens and shorter maritime connections, is an ideal canvas for sustainable experimentation.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis outlined four key pillars guiding Poros’ green metamorphosis:

  1. the creation of a photovoltaic park to power the island
  2. the electrification of the ferry route to Galatas on the mainland
  3. the promotion of e-mobility
  4. the establishment of a circular economy centred on recycling and waste utilization.

This visionary initiative not only cements Poros as a beacon of environmental consciousness but also strengthens the bonds between the UAE and Greece, marking a significant milestone in their strategic partnership.

As the island charts its course toward green resilience, it invites the world to witness a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, where sustainability and natural beauty coalesce.
