Around Greece

Google street view maps now available for Greece

Well it took a lot longer than anyone expected but Google street view images are now available for a selection of locations in Greece. After negotiations with the Data Protection Authority in Greece which placed a ban on the usage of such images in 2009, the much anticipated street view images were finally put live online.

At the moment there are street views for a number of locations including Chania in Crete, Nafplion, Plaka and the Acropolis Museum in Athens, the port of Mykonos, the old town of Corfu and several others.

Hopefully this will be the start of many other places around Greece being released as street view images. I remember back in May 2009 that I saw the Google car out and about in Agios Dimitrios in Athens and snapped a few photos of it.

Since then, the Google street view car has been spotted in destinations all over Greece and the Greek islands.

Panos Panagiotopoulos, the Culture Minister of Greece, said during the launch event in Athens “We have so much to show off. This is a godsend.”
