Lesvos Island Holidays

The island of Lesvos, or Mytilini as it is also known, is one of the largest island in Greece, and is one of immense natural beauty, and a popular holiday destination for visitors from all over the world.

Lesvos provides visitors with some stunning scenery and landscapes, magnificent beaches, and very tasty local cuisine. It is an island rich in both history and beauty, and one where the traditions and history can be found on every corner.

Lesvos (Mytilini) is the homeland of Pittakos, one of the seven sages (men of wisdom) of antiquity. The island is famous for the the poets Alkeos and Sappho, who celebrated their love through their poetry.

The capital of the island is Mytilini, which is decorated with a wonderful array of traditional fortressed mansions, and were culture and tradition still play a huge part in everyday life. Mytilini is also the homeland of Odysseas Elytis (the Nobel Prize winning author), and Stratis Myrivili, a famous personality in Greek literature.

The region of Plomari is a very popular destination on Lesvos, and is famed for the traditional ouzo distilleries. Another popular part of the island is Thermi, where you can enjoy the natural spas, and also visit the Monastery of Agios Rafeal.

For beaches, visitors can head to Vatera, which is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean Sea. A popular destination on Lesvos for travellers is that of Molyvos, or Mythimna as it is also known.

Here you will see an impressive Byzantine fortress, and picturesque cobbled paths. Recently, the area has become an "art colony", which artists from all over the world travelling here.

Other interesting places to visit is the region of Sygri, which has a wonderful fossilized forest. You can also head to the regions of Eressos and Kalloni, which are famous for the tasty sardines that are caught by the local fisherman in the charming bay.

Molyvos in Lesvos Greece

Another part of Lesvos that is worth visiting is Agiassos, located on the foot hill of Mount Olympus, which is famous for the traditional embroidery and weaved products that are produced here. In the region of Varia, you can pay a visit to the Teriand Museum, where you will be able to see works of art by the folklore painter Theofillos.

Whichever way you prefer to call the island, Lesvos or Mytilini offer a perfect destination for enjoyable and rewarding holidays. It's beaches, villages, landscape and history make the island one that can be enjoyed by all.
