The island of Hydra ( Ydra ) is one of the most unique and beautiful in all of Greece. It is a relatively small island, located very close to the county of Argolida in the Peloponnese region of Greece.

Built amphitheatrically around the quaint and colour harbour, Hydra is famous for it’s beautiful white houses and the stunning architecture. Visitors to the island can enjoy a walk around the town, and see just why the architecture here is so loved and famous.

Another aspect of life on Hydra which is famous throughout Greece is that all transportation around the island is done by donkey. Cars and motor vehicles are prohibited on the island.

Hydra is a very picturesque island, filled with cobblestone paths along which you can walk around the narrow and winding streets. The traditional houses, colourful gardens and lovely shops create a wonderful setting. The pretty harbour is also another nice place to visit and enjoy a walk.

There are a huge number of churches and chapels scattered all over the island. If you find the opportunity, it is definitely worth paying a visit to some of these, where you can get a fascinating insight into the religious history and heritage of the island.

How do I travel to Hydra ?

The beautiful Argosaronic island of Hydra is only accessible by sea. There are a number of ferry and hydrofoil ( flying dolphin ) services to and from the island and the port of Piraeus. There is no airport on Hydra, so you will have to take a flight to Athens and from there, head over to Piraeus to ferry to the island. During the summer months there are daily connections between Hydra and Piraeus, but off season, the connections are more limited.
